TRENDS TO TAKE YOU INTO AUTUMN WINTER: PART ONE

GO-GO-GADGET GRANNY

Ever since Iris Apfel declared herself an ‘octogenarian starlet,’ the fashion industry has been crushing out on the over-80s and it’s about time. Cue a whole host of mature muses emerging from the ether; Joan Didion for Céline, Joni Mitchell for Saint Laurent, Charlotte Rampling for Nars and Apfel for Kate Spade and Alexis Bittar.

I recently went to see Iris, Albert Maysles’ documentary about Iris Apfel’s life as an interior designer and style maven and oh, what a woman! Even more poignant was the fact that this was Maysles’ directorial swansong; he died shortly after the film’s completion. As the old adage goes, ‘more is more’ and thus arises Iris’ philosophy; she piles on bangle after bangle and clashes prints and colours like a true fashion veteran. So – to sum up, the new season motto: Neophytes are out, nonagenarians are in. The perfect example of the eclectic ‘I found it at a junkyard’ look is embodied in Gucci’s new woman as imagined by hot-right-now newcomer Alessandro Michele. Margot Tenebaum is a major reference, as is Chewbacca or the Hobbit (I know, right?). Just check out these horse-bit loafers and kangaroo-lined eel pumps (phew!). Like stepping into your dreams. If your dreams are fluffy and fabulous.

RUNWAY INSPIRATION

THE FABRIC – SHEARLING

It’s time to dust off your winter wardrobe because the new season’s it-fabric is gearing up for a cosy season ahead. The perfect example was Louis Vuitton’s runway collection where Nicolas Ghesquière’s heady mix of futuristic sheen and reinvented heritage brewed up a veritable storm at the space-age setting designed by uber architect, Frank Gehry. Shearling had it’s moment in the limelight last autumn winter and it’s going nowhere this season.

This autumn winter, the hero piece for Granny-chic was the pussybow blouse, as spotted on the runways of Ryan Lo, Gucci, Emilio Pucci and Bottega Veneta. How to wear it? Any way you like! Take inspiration from Apfel and style it your way. Whether it’s an origami pleat or a tiny Texan-inspired bow, pair it with trousers for the ultimate modern updated to the classic, antiquarian look.
