Balenciaga has been a favourite of mine ever since Nicholas Ghesquiere took the reins in 1997. I was sceptical that the brand could retain its cutting edge aesthetic without the expertise of Ghesquiere but the appointment of Alexander Wang was perhaps an even more fitting marriage of innovation and design. Wang’s tenure at Balenciaga warrants a hearty recommendation and his re-imagining of the brand bears heavy notes of an androgynous sports luxe look. When Swedish super-giant H&M announced its collaboration with Alexander Wang, whispers of pool sliders and monogrammed scuba jerseys rang through the air with frenzied tones. Not only is the collection super stylish, it is also highly functional with crop tops, leggings and sports wear almost too hot to wear to the gym. Although I swore off crop tops in the early noughties, it was hard to resist succumbing to the trend and this sports bra combined with leggings and hard metallic jewellery brings an authentic urban feel to an otherwise laid back look.
Luckily, living in Ireland where the collaboration has less demand than in the U.K., I didn’t have to queue and bought these pieces after the hype had died down in the late evening. For an alternative look, these leggings would look great with an oversized white or black t-shirt (Cheap Monday do a fab version) and some Isabel Marant style high tops. I love combining casual separates with a dressy statement piece and I think this crop top would look amazing with a 50s style midi skirt.
